About the Beginners Course

Our Introductory Beginners Course is suitable for absolute beginners and newcomers to yoga, as well as those returning to yoga after a break. All ages. No experience required.

Iyengar yoga is a comprehensive method with much attention to detail, precision and alignment. This style of yoga is especially adaptable to individual needs. In our classes, we actively work with the whole body and engage the mind. 

Our 10-week program for beginners is structured with a thoughtfully sequenced weekly progression with attending at least once a week. You will gain more and more confidence as we progress through the basic poses and concepts week by week, safely guided and supported by a fully qualified, Iyengar-certified and highly experienced yoga teacher. By the end of the course, most students will be well-equipped to start the next level of classes.

You don’t need any experience and don't need to be flexible to do the course. Whatever body shape, whatever age, all are welcome. All you need is a flexible and open mind and a willingness to give it a go. The studio is fully equipped with all you need to practice yoga. If you have your own mat, you are welcome to bring it. 

Coming to class just once a week, each 75-minute session will cost you only $18. If this bargain is not quite enough, we allow you to attend as many beginners’ classes per week as you wish – at absolutely no extra cost! The intro offer also allows you to swap classes around as needed provided we have availability. Flexibility is key for us!

The course is sequenced over 10 weeks with 6 weekly classes to choose from. Our 75-minute classes allow sufficient time for well-deserved relaxation at the end of each class.

What to Expect

You don’t need to be flexible to sign up for the course; all you need is a flexible and open mind, and a willingness to give it a go.

In our beginners yoga classes we explore the essential foundations of Iyengar Yoga and teach variations of yoga poses (asanas) appropriately for the beginner level. The Iyengar Yoga method is known for its precision and focus on alignment, teaching you a safe approach to yoga postures.

A class is structured starting with more active poses where we work with the whole body, ending with relaxation. The class is 1 hour 15 minutes long.

Each new pose is introduced with the teacher demonstrating, coupled with detailed explanations. Adjustments will be given as appropriate and executed with the utmost skill and respect. 

Before attending you will need to fill out a medical form. Depending on individual needs, the teacher will provide you with alternative ways to work within a pose.

With our weekly progressing classes, we endeavour to instil confidence in you in your yoga practice and to provide you with stimulating challenges for both your body and mind.


What are my options?

If you prefer a slower pace with more individual support, we’d recommend coming along to our Gentle Beginner Classes. Gentle beginners classes are a great way of gaining confidence when working with injuries, medical issues and also for seniors or mature aged students. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find yourself capable of! 

Gentle classes are currently running on Thursdays at 12 pm noon and go for 75 minutes. 

You are not restricted to gentle classes after signing up, should you want to explore the regular beginners classes offered during the week.

If you have done yoga elsewhere, we generally recommend entering the school through our 10-week intro course (only $180 for up to 6 class times a week). This course will give you the best introduction and solid foundations in the Iyengar Yoga method and how we teach at this studio. Iyengar Yoga is very specific and methodical in how asanas are taught to beginners versus more experienced students. 

We are however totally flexible to upgrade you to the next level once we get a feel for your yoga experience. We transfer any credit from your initial course to a new suitable pass. Of course, we are very happy to discuss this with you in person or over the phone.


You are welcome to purchase a single class before committing to purchase the whole course. You will be credited the single class price if you decide to sign up for the full course.

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer a total of six weekly beginner classes where we teach the essential foundations of Iyengar yoga. With the INTRO OFFER, you have the flexibility to attend as many of these classes as you’d like. Our recommendation is to attend at least once a week as the beginners course is progressing week by week. So, the majority of our students will turn up to one class per week. However, some keen students may wish to attend more often to consolidate their learning and experience more regular yoga practice. With the INTRO OFFER, you are welcome to come as often as your schedule allows and there are spaces available. We love having enthusiastic students in the room and sharing our love for Iyengar Yoga.

Our yoga studio is a spacious and open room with timber flooring and natural light. The studio is well-ventilated with natural airflow, as well as equipped with split-system air conditioning, ceiling fans, and wheelchair access. In our reception area, we can offer space for storing personal items during a class. There is a change room along with unisex toilets both inside and outside.

In our studio we provide all standard props for yoga and are fitted out with specialised props such as wall ropes, a tressler, and a demonstration stage, to name a few. 

Parking is usually available in front of the yoga schoolalong Steel Street. Alternatively, daytime parking is available along the TudorStreet side of Gregson Park or across the road in front of Hamilton PublicSchool.

Ideally, please allow 3 hours after a heavy meal before doing yoga or attending a class. You may have a light snack up 2 hours before class.

Hydrate well before class. A water dispenser is available at the studio.

No, you do not need to be flexible for attending our yoga classes. Our classes are suitable for everybody, regardless of body, gender, ability, or age. Please contact us if you have a particular concern you would like to discuss.

Centrally located in Newcastle in the heart of Hamilton, the iconic G.U.O.O.F. hall next to luscious Gregson Park has been welcoming yoga students of all ages for over 24 years. This yoga school, previously called Novocastrian School of Yoga, was established by David Morley in 1996 as Newcastle's first Iyengar yoga school.

Our spacious and modernised studio is a fully equipped yoga space with all necessary props provided.
