Happy 25th Anniversary Hamilton Yoga Newcastle

Happy 25th anniversary to the 25 years of yoga with David at the G.U.O.O.F. hall in Hamilton.
Today, we proudly acknowledged 25 years of teaching yoga at the G.U.O.O.F. hall in Hamilton with my students.
We celebrated the day with the Level 2 and Level 1 students - taking the time in the changeover between those classes to recreate the photo from that very first class 25 years ago. After the Level 1 class it was great to share a few stories over cake and a few chocolates about the origins of the school with some of the newer students. A few longer-term students reflected on their time - some having 'yoga careers' spanning 20+ years with me here in Hamilton.
The foundations for this yoga school were laid on this day, 25 years ago, on February 1st, 2000.

I had started teaching yoga 6 years before that, teaching out of a Hall on Alexander Street, Hamilton, later from Scotts Kirk Church hall on Murray Street, Hamilton, and Cantrill Hall on Tudor Street, Hamilton.
While I first registered my business as Novocastlrian School of Yoga in 1996, you can see that I have always been a ‘Hamilton Yoga’ teacher in the fullest sense.
I'm forever grateful to my parents for supporting me in 1999 to secure the G.U.O.O.F. hall that helped create Newcastle's first Iyengar yoga centre, and since has been the permanent home for our yoga school, now aptly named Hamilton Yoga.

Hamilton truly is my home for teaching yoga and hopefully for you to learn and practice yoga, and I hope it will be for many years to come.
Thank you for everyone on and off the mat supporting my business.
Without you, I wouldn't be here.
THANKS AGAIN, and here is to another 25 years!

Why we chant
Chanting at the beginning of our experienced yoga classes has been a regular feature at our yoga school over the decades. The chanted Invocation to Patanjali is a very centering practice before the beginning of each yoga practice.

Story of a Newcastle yoga teacher
I often get asked this question, "What do you do for work?". When I reply that I am a full-time yoga teacher in Newcastle, many more unspoken questions arise. In reality, there is not a simple answer to this question.

The Wall is Our Friend in Iyengar Yoga
The wall is probably one of the most versatile props that can be used in yoga based on our individual needs. It provides gentle support, is great for restorative work, or can provide that extra challenge. Making use of this in the practice of yoga can prove to be an invaluable asset to facilitate self-correction and learning.
